4 Simple Ways To Solidify Your Wireless Connection

There are many things that interrupt a wireless signal, but there are some simple ways that you can increase your wireless connectivity. Below is a compiled list of the most common for Windows.

  1. Only have one preferred network in range at any given time. - If you are using the windows connection utility then I recommend that you set it up so that there is only one preferred network in range at any given time. Preferred networks are networks that your computer trusts. Unfortunately, windows has the tendency to randomly connect to preferred networks it discovers near by. This would be good except that often you are already connected and don’t need to connect to a different network. Essentially it can make for a turbulent connection because you bounce between wireless networks if there is more than one preferred network in range. So be careful to limit the number of preferred networks in range to one network at a time.
  2. Use the windows connection utility for Wi-Fi connections - To connect to Wi-Fi networks I highly recommend you use the Operating System’s connection utility. Third Party utilities are often not made with the best of intentions in mind. They often just clog up your system. Disabling the third party tools and using the Operating System’s utility greatly simplifies the process of connecting and also removed a number of potential pitfalls for your computer.
  3. Turn off your microwave - Microwaves and some home phones operate on the same frequency as your Wi-Fi connection. In my house when someone turns on the microwave then the connection drops from good to poor almost instantly. I have lost a connection because of my microwave as well. It is silly to think about, but your microwave could be distorting your wireless signal.
  4. Add a repeater to your network - Adding a repeater often will boost the signal from your wireless router. Sometimes the connectivity problem is just your wireless router being too far away. This is easily fixed with a small investment in a repeater that will boost the strength of your wireless signal.

Using these simple steps you can avoid a lot of problems with your wireless connection switching off.
