How to Avoid Viruses All Together

Yesterday I reviewed what virus scan products were best based on criteria I gave the day before for determining a good anti-virus system. In both posts I mentioned that there is a method for “avoiding viruses all together.” (I also mentioned I’d rather that you pay me to find out, but instead, I’m going to give it away for free today!) The secret to avoiding viruses is to understand them. Continue Reading →

Anti-Virus Revisited

A friend of mine sent me an email after reading this morning’s post asking the following question:

I once scanned a computer that had Panda installed on it with Avast and
Avast seemed to think that some of Panda’s files were dangerous. I
showed this to …[a friend]… and she told me that quite often, anti-virus programs
will lock onto other anti-virus programs as if they are harmful. I’m
supposing that this is probably because of the way that anti-virus

What makes a spectacular anti-virus program?

There are five tests for determining a spectacular anti-virus program.

1.) Effectiveness on the large & small scales

For an anti-virus program to be beneficial to you or your business it needs to be able to protect you from viruses. That seems like a no brainer but the number of viruses that slip past some of the more popular anti-virus tools out there is really quite amazing. Your anto-virus tool needs to protect your computer from viruses, but you should also know that it protects many computers from viruses. It is hard to get this kind of information because you’d have to have experience from many systems and an understanding of the environment they are in. Asking your friends and family for their experience with viruses (not the anti-virus software) will show you how effective their anti-virus software is for them. Get a sampling of what people are using and then see how effective it is. Also, browsing the net for answers can’t hurt. Continue Reading →

Secrets of Purchasing a Dell

Those that know me well will know that I am a huge fan of Dell. I have tried not to let it slip out too much on this blog because people are quite energetic about who they buy from and I don’t want to start a serious flame war over the subject.

However, I did want to share a few secrets for whenever you purchase a new Dell machine. Continue Reading →
