Effective Trouble Shooting

One of the things people spend most of their time doing with their computer is troubleshooting. For instance, I have been having some trouble with this new theme constantly switching back to the old theme. I don’t know why it is doing that so I have been wrestling with the stupid website to get it to work. In this situation I’m going to guess that you do one of two things. Continue reading →

How to Avoid Magic

In the past two posts we have seen that Magic is a very bad thing for your computer. Why? Because magic is simply a lack of understanding.

In my last post I showed that if we don’t understand, then we can’t fix a problem. I specifically mentioned that all that is left is trial and error. Continue reading →

Why Magic Is REALLY Bad For Your Computer

From my last post it would seem that Magic wouldn’t be so bad for your computer — but I have bad news for you.

Ironically, right before writing this post, I got a call. A friend and client of mine was having trouble with Microsoft Word (Word and windows practice a LOT of magic.) The issue was that word crashes right when it is opened. I am not sure he was even seeing anything. I couldn’t give him a good answer on the phone because I couldn’t see the computer and there were no good methods online to give me an adequate solution to the problem. Why? Because no one has a clue what is going on behind the scenes with Microsoft Word except for Bill Gates and his cronies. It is, for all intensive purposes, magic that word even opens in the first place. So there is no explanation other than trial and error for Microsoft products. Continue reading →

Multi-Tasking Pt 1

Even now I am setting my wife up with accounting software while also writing this post while beginning to format a drive so I can use it at a computer appointment in an hour. I know you are waiting for the secret tip. The very core of what makes me good at multi-tasking on the computer.

The trick is as simple as this: practice. I have done most of these things enough times to be able to do them in my sleep. Continue reading →

A Warning Against College IT Departments

My sister-in-law is going to be attending her first year of college this year (yay!) But that lead to the need to purchase a computer which lead to the following question:

Should we purchase a warranty from the college technology department on a laptop that we bring there?

My answer: waste of money. Continue reading →

You Deserve To Use a Computer Without People Telling You What To Do Over Your Shoulder

The night before last was spent training family friends of mine how to use two new laptops that I set up for them. As I was showing them the ins and outs of Windows Vista and their new system other people who were there in the room with us kept piping up to help point out how to perform certain tasks. Hardware or Software? The Simplest Diagnosis of a Problem

When I first started working for a PC Repair business my boss gave me a sure-fire way to tell the difference between a hardware problem and a software problem. Hardware means hundreds or thousands of dollars, software just means finding the bug to fix it.

It is as simple as this: Continue reading →

Why you aren’t protected from viruses

If you are running McAfee AntiVirus or Norton AntiVirus then you are not protected from viruses. You are basically funneling your money into a bloated piece of software that eats up CPU cycles. Want to know why? Continue reading →

The Chain Theory

To remain simple is to remain alive

Computers provide a very easy way to work your way into a complex nightmare of a network.

You buy one computer and then it all snowballs from there. Eventually you find yourself connecting your desktop to your laptop to your PDA to your cell phone to your TV to your microwave! And of course the only task you cannot get done is the one thing you are trying to do because the entire system is going up in flames! Continue reading →
